A Blind-spot/Rear Cross-path detection system and Adaptive Cruise Control with Forward Collision Warning are available.

Following is a list of safety and security features available in the all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee:

  • Active Head Restraints: Deploy in the event of a rear collision. Restraints are designed to reduce injuries by minimizing the gap between the head restraint and the passenger's head

  • Active Turn Signals: Turn signal flashes three times when stalk is depressed for one second to indicate a lane change

  • Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC): The system decreases the vehicle's pre-set cruise-control speed when closing in on another vehicle in the same lane, or when another vehicle pulls into the same lane. The system will accelerate to the pre-set speed when the vehicle in front speeds up or moves into another lane. ACC will maintain a driver adjustable distance between the vehicle and the one in front of it, allowing the use of cruise control in light traffic without having to continuously adjust settings

  • Advanced Multi-stage Air Bags: Inflates with a force appropriate to the severity of the impact. Meets FMVSS 208 advanced air bag requirements for smaller, out-of-position occupants

  • Anti-lock Brake System (ABS): Senses and prevents wheel lockup, offering improved steering control under extreme braking and/or slippery conditions

  • Anti-lock Brake System with Rough-road Detection: Anti-lock brake system is capable of detecting if the vehicle is driving on a rough road by the oscillations in the wheel speed signals. When rough road is detected on off-road surfaces or trails, ABS enters a different pressure control where it will hold the brake pressure for longer pulses

  • BeltAlert: Activates a chime and/or illuminates an icon in the instrument cluster to remind the driver and front passenger to buckle up if a vehicle is driven without belted front-seat occupants

  • Blind-spot Monitoring (BSM): Uses dual ultra-wideband radar sensors to aid the driver when changing lanes, or if being passed by or passing unseen vehicles. The system notifies the driver of vehicle(s) in their blind spot via illuminated icons on the sideview mirror and with a driver-selected audible chime

  • Brake Assist: In an emergency brake situation, the system applies maximum braking power, minimizing the stopping distance

  • Brake-traction Control System (BTCS): Helps to keep driving wheels from spinning during acceleration from a stop or during slow speeds by applying individual brakes to the slipping wheel(s)

  • Brake Override: When a disagreement exists between the throttle and the brake, the brake signal causes the engine controller to reduce engine power, allowing the operator to stop the car

  • Child Seat Anchor System: LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren) is designed to ease installation of compatible aftermarket child seats

  • Constant-force Retractors (CFR): Regulates the force exerted on the occupant by the seat belt, and then gradually releases seat-belt webbing in a controlled manner

  • Electronic Roll Mitigation (ERM): An extension of Electronic Stability Control (ESC). Uses input from ESC sensors to anticipate if the vehicle is at risk of entering a potential roll situation, then applies the brakes individually and modulates the throttle position as needed

  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC): Enhances driver control and helps maintain directional stability under all conditions. Provides the benefit in critical driving situations such as turns, and is valuable when driving on mixed surface conditions including snow, ice or gravel. If there is a discernible difference between driver input through the steering wheel and the vehicle's path, ESC applies selective braking and throttle input to guide the vehicle back on to the driver's intended path

  • Energy-absorbing Steering Column: The manual-adjust steering column utilizes two hydroformed coaxial tubes that can move relative to each other to allow the column to move forward for enhanced energy absorption during a crash. The power-adjust steering column employs a calibrated bending element that deforms during column stroke for optimal energy management

  • Enhanced Accident Response System (EARS): Makes it easier for emergency personnel to see and reach occupants in the event of an accident by turning on the interior lighting and unlocking doors after air bag deployment. Also shuts off flow of fuel to the engine

  • Express Up/Down Windows: One-touch powered express up/down window button located on the front driver and passenger-side door

  • Forward Collision Warning (FCW): Using forward-facing radar sensors, this system detects when the vehicle may be approaching another vehicle too rapidly and alerts the driver so the driver can determine what action must be taken in order to prevent the vehicle from a collision

  • High-intensity Discharge (HID) Headlamps: Provide approximately three times the light output of conventional reflector lamps for improved nighttime illumination

  • Hill-descent Control (HDC): Allows smooth and controlled descent on rough or slippery terrain without the driver having to touch the brake pedal. Applies the brakes to each wheel individually when needed to reduce forward motion when negotiating steep grades

  • Hill-start Assist (HSA): Assists drivers when starting a vehicle from a stop on a hill by maintaining the level of brake pressure applied for a short period of time after a driver's foot is removed from the brake pedal. If throttle is not applied within a short period of time after the driver's foot is removed from the brake pedal, brake pressure will be released

  • Keyless Enter-N-Go: When an individual enters the vehicle, electronic sensors detect if the vehicle key fob is present. The vehicle will then allow the individual to push a button to start the vehicle without having to insert the key into the ignition

  • Knee Bolsters: The lower instrument panel and the glove-box door are designed to properly position the occupant during impact, enabling air bags to work effectively

  • Navigation System: Voice-activated navigation system available with real-time traffic to provide precise guidance to destination through the use of Global Positioning System (GPS) satellite technology

  • ParkSense® Rear-park Assist System: Assists at low speeds in reverse to detect stationary objects. Consists of audible warnings for the driver and has a display in the Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC) integrated into the instrument cluster

  • ParkView™ rear back-up camera: Provides a wide-angle view of the area immediately behind the vehicle, giving the driver greater peace of mind before reversing at low speeds. Contains grid line to aid the driver when maneuvering into parking spaces or narrow areas. Also aids in lining up a trailer to the vehicle's trailer hitch, when so equipped. The image is displayed on the navigation screen when the transmission is shifted into Reverse

  • Power Tilt-and-telescoping Steering Column with Memory: Allows steering column to tilt and move toward or away from the driver to achieve a safe and comfortable distance from the advanced multi-stage front driver air bag, if deployed

  • Rain Brake Support: Uses the ESC pump to occasionally push brake pads lightly against brake rotors in rainy conditions in order to keep rotors dry

  • Rain-sensing Wipers: A driver convenience feature that automatically senses moisture on the windshield and activates wipers

  • Ready Alert Braking: Anticipates situations when the driver may initiate an emergency brake stop and uses the ESC pump to set brake pads against rotors in order to decrease the time required for full brake application

  • Rear Cross Path (RCP): In parking lot situations, this system warns drivers backing out of parking spaces of traffic moving toward their vehicle. It activates any time the vehicle is in Reverse. The driver is notified of vehicle(s) crossing behind the vehicle via illuminated icons on the sideview mirror and with a driver-selected audible chime

  • Remote (fob) Operated Windows (front windows - down only): Enable an individual to cool down their vehicle passively by opening front windows remotely

  • Remote Keyless Entry: Locks and unlocks doors and turns on interior lamps. If the vehicle is equipped with a security alarm, the remote also arms and disarms that system

  • Remote Start: Conveniently starts the engine and activates key comfort settings based on ambient conditions by using the key fob while maintaining vehicle security

  • Rollover Crash Sensing: Senses a rollover and deploys seat-belt pretensioners and/or standard full-length side-curtain air bags as needed

  • Seat-belt Pretensioners: During a collision, impact sensors initiate front seat- belt pretensioners to remove slack in the seatbelt system, thereby reducing the forward movement of the occupant's head and torso

  • Sentry Key® Engine Immobilizer: Utilizes an engine key that has an embedded transponder with a preprogrammed security code to discourage vehicle theft. When the key is inserted into the ignition, the controller sends a random number to the transponder and the engine is allowed to start. If an incorrect key is used, the engine will shut off after a few seconds

  • SmartBeam® Headlamps: Headlamp system adjusts to ambient light and oncoming traffic to deliver maximum lighting

  • Standard Full-length Side-curtain Air Bags: Extend protection to all outboard front- and rear-seat passengers. Each side air bag has its own impact sensor that autonomously triggers the air bag on the side where an impact occurs. This type of air bag is housed in the headliner just above side windows

  • Standard Seat-mounted Side Thorax Air Bags: Provide enhanced protection to the driver and front outboard passenger in certain impacts. Each side air bag has its own impact sensor that autonomously triggers the air bag on the side where an impact occurs. Standard side air bags are housed within the outboard side of each front seat

  • Three-point Seat Belts: Front outboard seating positions and all rear seating positions have lap and shoulder belts

  • Tire-pressure Monitoring (TPM): Informs driver when tire pressure is too low. Pressure-sensor modules within the valve stems of all four road wheels send continuous radio-frequency signals to a receiver and the system

  • Trailer-sway Control (TSC): Reduces trailer sway and improves handling in adverse towing conditions caused by crosswinds and traffic. The system monitors the vehicle's movement relative to the driver's intended path, then applies alternating brake pressure to slow the vehicle and then increases the pressure on one front wheel in order to counteract the sway induced by the trailer

  • Uconnect Phone: In-vehicle, voice-activated communication system that allows customers to talk on their Bluetooth compatible phone with your hands on the wheel and eyes on the road. The built-in phonebook sync feature automatically downloads as many as 1,000 phone book entries from supported phones, which can then be selected by simply saying contact name

Chrysler Group LLC's Jefferson North Assembly Plant Transforms Itself in Preparation for 2011 Jeep® Grand Cherokee Launch

Detroit , May 21, 2010 - Chrysler Group LLC's Jefferson North (Detroit) Assembly Plant (JNAP) celebrated the launch of production today of the all-new 2011 Jeep® Grand Cherokee.

The nearly 3-million-square-foot assembly plant, one of the last in an urban setting, has been the site of Grand Cherokee production since its introduction in 1992. But in preparation for production of the all-new Grand Cherokee, JNAP went through a complete transformation as part of World Class Manufacturing (WCM), an extensive and thorough process to restore all Chrysler Group facilities to their original and maximum functionality.

"WCM is designed to make our plants flexible and competitive with the best in the world," said Sergio Marchionne, CEO, Chrysler Group LLC. "At the same time, WCM also is intended to put dignity into the work place, and this is not an inconsequential thing."

While Chrysler Group has implemented manufacturing programs in the past, what makes WCM different is that it fully engages people and empowers them to take ownership of the process.

"Dignity at what people do is crucial," said Marchionne. "The workplace should be a place that you can be proud of, that you can take your kids to and show them where you work, and that will reflect fundamental values of human self-respect.

"That's why WCM is such an agent of change," Marchionne continued.

With people driving the pace of change, WCM encapsulates just about every aspect of a plant's operations to continuously improve efficiency over the long term. It intersects with reducing waste, advancing quality, increasing cost savings and improving workplace environment as well as safety.

"The practice of WCM takes aim at eliminating classic waste issues, such as overproduction, excess machine motion and surplus material, but also changes the mindset around what constitutes waste," said Scott Garberding, Senior Vice President and Head of Manufacturing, Chrysler Group LLC. "WCM is far broader in scope than other programs we've implemented because of the ongoing measurement and tangible evaluations that are built into it."

WCM accelerates efforts to build more reliable cars and trucks. Specifically, WCM implements a quality matrix that defines different issues within a particular process, which empowers workers and managers to identify and correct problems more quickly.

"WCM involves a fundamental cultural shift in the way we approach production," said Garberding. "It recognizes that the real success of our enterprise depends on the people in our manufacturing facilities."

WCM has proven successful in improving operations across Fiat's global manufacturing network, which has been managing the process for several years.

"After I got involved with the concept of WCM, I think it's a really great way of doing business. I see how management and union are working together for the same cause — to build a world-class vehicle," said Glynda Curry, JNAP Body-in-White, Model Area Team Leader. "I think with this concept of WCM, we're on the right road to a great, successful business."

While WCM at Chrysler is still in its infancy, there already have been some tangible results in every model area where WCM has been established. JNAP is a prime example of how WCM has impacted the launch of the all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Implementing World Class Manufacturing (WCM)
During the fall of 2009, when the plant was down to prepare for the Grand Cherokee launch, the JNAP workforce went to work focusing on ways to improve the look and functionality of the plant. They made significant changes in workplace organization and logistics systems, found ways to improve quality, and addressed ergonomic issues. The result is a facility that is fundamentally unrecognizable today.

"In the past, during a shut-down, we would lay-off the majority of the employees and bring in contractors to clean and make the necessary changes. Then, we would bring everyone back and restart the plant," said Garberding. "This time, we kept everyone working throughout the four-week shut-down, just in a different way. By doing this, we involved them in the process and gave them complete ownership. This has translated into a workforce that is passionate about their workplace and committed to building a high quality vehicle."

Everything in the plant was repainted and scrubbed, then processes were put in place to ensure that the high level of cleanliness is maintained. At the same time, hourly teams provided input into how the new Grand Cherokee would be built. They were completely involved in developing work instructions and identifying opportunities to improve the process.

One example of how JNAP team members were empowered to make changes in the assembly process occurred in the Trim Department. In the old process, team members would have to get in and out of the vehicle moving on the line several times to gather parts to complete their job. Finding this to be an inefficient operation, the team used some existing equipment to create an arm that would hold a tray with all of the parts on it. The arm, suspended on an overhead rail, travels along with the line, allowing team members to extend the arm with the tray into the vehicle providing easy access to the parts as they are needed.

"WCM has helped us pinpoint our issues and solve problems," said Steve Ball, JNAP Team 17, Team Leader. "Communication has easily quadrupled. The team members come in and say, 'Here's our problem.' So we communicate from the team members doing the job, to the team leader, and then to management."

Taking the transformation one step further, more than 1,400 hourly and salaried employees participated in more than 44,000 hours of training in preparation for launch and submitted over 2,500 suggestions on how to further improve the processes to ensure the highest quality Grand Cherokee rolls off the line. These changes, throughout paint and assembly operations, have given the facility an all-new level of manufacturing flexibility for multiple product capability.

"The passion and excitement has radiated throughout the facility," said Pat Walsh, JNAP Plant Manager. "The teams were on the floor identifying and repairing issues; they painted and cleaned all of the equipment as well as production and non-production areas to bring the facility back to its original state. And, because they did all of this work themselves, they are working each day to maintain the results of their efforts. The plant is unrecognizable and very impressive."

JNAP's All-new Body Shop
One of the most significant parts of the plant's transformation included a 285,000-square-foot expansion to replace the existing body shop that was completed in July 2008. Even though completed two years ago, the new facility wasn't full engaged until the launch of the Grand Cherokee.

The newest body shop in the Company's manufacturing network was designed to incorporate the most advanced production processes as well as be flexible enough to accommodate as many as four different models.

In a first for the Chrysler Group, all of the major assembly and conveyance systems used in the body shop were constructed initially on site, whereas in the past, the same equipment was set up at a supplier's facility, tested, dismantled and reconstructed at the Company's facility. With this new process, Chrysler Group was able to compress setup time and save millions of dollars in unnecessary cost.

"With quality being a key focus of the Grand Cherokee launch, many processes were implemented with a ‘flawless' launch in mind," said Mark McDowell, JNAP Body Shop Senior Manager. "The body shop is home to more than 600 robots, some of which can be programmed to monitor the fit and finish of the vehicle to the most finite of measures. Should a part be found out of compliance, the line will stop and adjustments can be made immediately to ensure that cars on the line meet the specified targets."

To further enhance and ensure the highest quality fit and finish on the Grand Cherokee, production of the doors and liftgates was moved to JNAP, thereby increasing the level of quality control.

Another tool brought to JNAP to further improve quality was a new Metrology Center. Housed within the 20,000-square-foot space dedicated to verifying a variety of key measurements is the Meisterbock gauge. Used throughout the Fiat system, JNAP is the first Chrysler Group facility and one of only a few U.S. automotive manufacturing facilities to have this equipment.

The Meisterbock is used to verify the capability of the vehicle's entire sheet metal structure to the smallest of tolerances, as small as a human hair. The aim is to identify possible deviations between the product and the process.

"The Meisterbock is an outstanding tool that will allow the manufacturing team at JNAP to maintain the highest level of quality," said McDowell.

One of the other new additions to the plant is the on-site Metering Center. The purpose of the Metering Center is to take individual parts shipped in by suppliers and bundle them together, so line operators can more easily select the parts they need for a specific job and reduce the amount of material line side. This function, previously managed by a supplier off-site, was built in the space once occupied by the old body shop. By bringing the Metering Center function in house, the Company was able to reduce work in process material from suppliers, improve work flow and increase the efficiency of the workers. In addition, about 100 UAW jobs were added to support the Metering Center workload.

Not only was the new body shop designed to be extremely flexible and functional, it was also designed to be aesthetically pleasing to employees.

"The new body shop was specifically designed to align with our guiding principle of WCM, with some unique features that make this facility a better place to work for employees and a place they can be proud of," said Plant Manager Walsh.

The walkway to the new body shop entrance has been shortened and landscaped, improving the accessibility and appearance of the facility.

Once inside, the centerpiece of the new body shop is an atrium, providing a grand employee entrance, which features the Chrysler Group logo on the floor and Detroit-area artistic photography selected by the employees on the walls. Skylights have been placed throughout the shop to provide lots of natural light and a clear view of the outside.

Much attention was paid to being environmentally-friendly with the use of high efficiency fluorescent fixtures with measured brightness to provide superior visibility. The aisles have been polished for durability and safety, and the floors have been painted white to clearly show contaminants.

The needs of employees have been addressed with the addition of relaxation areas, high quality areas designed to provide a respite from the plant floor and new locker rooms for employees to securely store personal property and "suit up" for work.

Camp Jeep® Returns to 2010 New York International Auto Show

  • Unique, popular outdoor driving course will demonstrate capability of Jeep® vehicles
  • Consumers can experience the Jeep vehicle lineup April 2 — April 11 at the Jacob Javits Center

New York , Mar 29, 2010 -
The Jeep® brand is bringing Camp Jeep, a unique driving experience, to consumers attending the 2010 New York International Auto Show, April 2 — April 11 at the Jacob Javits Center.

Camp Jeep is the ultimate outdoor auto show off-road driving test. The 25,000-square foot exhibit will give auto show attendees a chance to experience the extreme on- and off-road capabilities of Jeep vehicles without leaving the Javits Center.

"We have created this unique auto show opportunity to provide our customers with a memorable experience that no other manufacturer can offer," said Mike Manley, President and CEO — Jeep Brand, Chrysler Group LLC. "The iconic Jeep brand offers an adventurous lifestyle and vehicles that deliver legendary 4x4 capability. Attendees will enjoy the Jeep experience first-hand on the show floor beginning this weekend."

The course will be comprised of several obstacles that simulate some of the rigorous testing that Jeep vehicles endure before customers get behind the wheel. This provides consumers a first-hand look at the capability standards of Jeep vehicles for Ground Clearance, Traction, Stability, Articulation and Suspension.

Product specialists will chauffeur participants in Jeep Wrangler, Wrangler Unlimited and Liberty models over a variety of surfaces, as well as an 18-foot mobile mountain and a 12 x 15-foot section of terrain simulating fallen logs measuring 18 inches in diameter. Attendees will also experience the adrenaline rush of looking nearly straight up or straight down as they navigate a 30-degree wedge to demonstrate the vehicle's body articulation. Each ride is about five minutes long.

The New York International Auto Show opens to the public on April 2. Hours for the show are Monday through Saturday, 11:00 a.m. — 10:30 p.m., and Sunday, 10:00 a.m. — 7:00 p.m.

The Jeep brand first introduced this innovative driving experience at the New York Auto Show in 2004. It has since appeared at numerous auto shows — including New York — throughout the country. Since its inception, more than a half million people have participated in a Camp Jeep test drive.
